C-13 NMR INVESTIGATION OF THE STABILITY OF A RESOL-TYPE PHENOL FORMALDEHYDE RESIN TOWARD FORMALIN, TOWARD BASE, AND TOWARD NONOXIDIZING OR OXIDIZING ACID

A resol-type phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin was subjected to various treatments: with 1 N sodium hydroxide solution or 1 N sulfuric acid solution under N2(g) at 65-degrees-C for 3 days, with 36.8% formalin under N2(g) at room temperature for 1 day, with 36 N sulfuric acid under N2(g) at room temperature or at 65-degrees-C for 1 day, and with 15 N nitric acid in air at room temperature for 1 day. The effects of these treatments on the structures of PF resins have been elucidated on the basis of C-13 CP/MAS NMR spectra and are discussed in terms of fundamental chemical processes.
