GROWTH OF BI2SR2CACU2O8 SINGLE-CRYSTALS USING MGO CRUCIBLES

摘要
We describe a method for growing large high quality single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 + delta by slow cooling nearly stoichiometric melts in the presence of a large thermal gradient. Magnesia crucibles are found to be far less reactive with the melt than alumina. This low reactivity allows for precise control of the melt starting composition. Crystals resulting from a variety of starting compositions are found to satisfy the formula Bi2.12(Sr1-xCax)2.83Cu2.05O8 + delta, where x varies from 0.25 to 0.41. The narrowness of their magnetic superconducting transitions indicates that these crystals are of very high quality.
