INTERFACIAL ADSORPTION OF SOLVENTS IN A POROUS POLYMER RESIN - A C-13 SPIN-ECHO AND ESR STUDY

Several spectroscopic methods have evidenced a fractal distribution of pore sizes in a cross-linked resin of poly(4-vinylpyridine). In this system, the nuclear relaxation of solvents is interpretable by an exchange between the pores and an outer adsorption shell. This model is supported by two independent determinations of the overall fraction of adsorbed ethanol: the fits of the solvent C-13 spin-echo decay and the ESR concentration measurements of polymer radicals selectively formed at contact with the solvent. The latter appears to be an efficient model-independent approach to estimate the extent of solvent penetration into the polymer network.
