Summary: Observations were made of the use of dilute (5-10 per cent w/v) solutions of ethanol as an induction agent in forty adult patients premedicated with atropine only. This was given rapidly over 5-8 minutes and the upper dose limited to 550 ml. The dose of ethanol required for sleep showed a wide variation and methohexitone was frequently needed to complete the induction. The incidence of emergence delirium was high and recovery delayed when a supplemental dose of methohexitone was employed. No cardiovascular complications were observed and respiratory depression was noted only when a barbiturate was also given. © 1969 John Sherratt and Son Ltd.
