In many four-dimensional compactifications of string theory, Fayet-Iliopoulos terms are generated. In addition to scalar and gauge boson masses, which have been computed elsewhere, these terms should give rise to masses for certain fermions. We show that these terms are generated, by explicit computations both covariantly and in the Green-Schwarz formalism. © 1990.
