CAPTURE OF APPLE MAGGOT (DIPTERA, TEPHRITIDAE) ADULTS ON PHEROCON, REBELL, AND STICKY SPHERE TRAPS

Seasonal captures of adults of R. pomonella (Walsh) on Pherocon AM and Tartar Red Dark Sphere traps in 2 unsprayed orchards at Kentville, Nova Scotia [Canada], were approximately equal and 1.2-3.5 times greater than the number of captures on Rebell traps. Females were captured more frequently on Pherocon traps and males more frequently on Spheres. The traps were equally efficient for monitoring early adult activity as there were only slight or no differences in the dates of 1st captures. Seasonal captures in 3 commercial orchards were exceptionally low, and although Rebell and Sphere traps captured the greatest number of adults in 1978 and 1979, respectively, the capture data from Pherocon traps were the most suitable to determine spray needs, especially the 1st application. Pherocon traps were easier to install, inspect and identify adult captures, and they were more appropriate for grower use.
