摘要
Homogeneous nucleation theory is applied to uranium carbide to describe bubble formation and swelling. It is concluded that at temperatures ≤ 700 °C and for burn-ups less than 5 × 1020 fissions/cm3, bubble formation is unlikely. A bubble nucleation time is predicted and its temperature-dependence discussed. Comparisons are illustrated between calculated and observed swelling of unrestrained uranium carbide and finally results are presented of calculations of carbide swelling under various idealised conditions. © 1969.
