In the past, the complexity and speed of ciliary activity have severely limited the success of a variety of quantification techniques; however, high-speed digital video techniques have addressed the shortcomings of earlier methods and the further development of this approach promises to simplify the dynamic investigations of ciliary activity and its regulation. © 1995, Academic Press Inc.
