THE GLASS TEMPERATURES OF VARIOUSLY QUENCHED PD-CU-SI GLASSES

摘要
The glass transition temperatures Tg of differently quenched Pd77.5Cu6Si16.5 glasses are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. The samples were prepared with a wide range of quenching rates q by either splat cooling or water quenching of the melt. All samples show an increase of Tg with heating rate s which can be described by the Arrhenius law. Replacing the heating rate s by q and then assuming that the Arrhenius law is also valid for the kinetics of the undercooled melt, the dependence of the glass temperature on q is determined. Regarding the thermal expansion coefficients of liquid and glassy Pd-Cu-Si, this temperature difference corresponds to a decrease in the mass density by 0.2%. Such a change is in reasonable agreement with density measurements on differently quenched Pd-Cu-Si glasses.
