TUMORIGENESIS WITH ISONICOTINIC ACID HYDRAZIDE AND URETHAN IN SYRIAN GOLDEN HAMSTERS

Solutions of 0·1% of isonicotinic acid hydrazide and urethan were given alone and also jointly in the drinking water to 5-week old Syrian golden hamsters for the remainder of their lifetime. The urethan-administration resulted in the induction of dermal melanocytomas, papillomas and carcinomas of forestomach, adenomatous polyps of caecum, pulmonary adenomatoses and various other types of tumors. Isonicotinic acid hydrazide-treatment alone was without any apparent carcinogenic effect, and the simultaneous isonicotinic acid hydrazide and urethan treatments gave rise to no significantly higher incidences of tumors than what resulted by either chemicals alone. The selective carcinogenicity of isonicotinic acid hydrazide in the various species are discussed in the light of the results obtained. © 1969.
