APPLICATION OF CORRELATION TECHNIQUES TO ISOLATE STRUCTURE IN EXPERIMENTAL DATA

A method is presented for automatically locating the structure, e.g., peaks, in experimental data through application of the cross-correlation function. Advantages of the method are simplicity, insensitivity of parameters, and a small number of parameters. To illustrate the versatility of this approach, example analyses are presented of data obtained with lithium-drifted germanium detectors, lithium-drifted silicon detectors, sodium-iodide detectors, and from neutron time-of-flight analyzers. Some comments are given on the general application of the method as it relates to automatic data analysis, particularly with on-line computers. © 1969.
