Symmetrical trialkyl (triaryl) phosphines, as well as diphenylphosphine and phosphine itself were protonated in fluorosulfuric acid. 1H and 31P nmr spectra of the phosphines and the corresponding phosphonium ions were studied. The one-bond coupling constant, JPH, is inversely related to the bulkiness of the alkyl sub-stituents. JPH and the three-bond coupling constant, JHPCH, are directly related. An empirical correlation of the phosphorus chemical shifts of the protonated phosphines with substituent constants was found. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
