ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS OF PATTERN-RECOGNITION TECHNIQUES

Source identification is an important problem in the area of environmental chemistry. Pollutants (e.g., processed fuels) must be related to their sources to develop effective strategies for the management of our environment. The potential of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for correlating hydrocarbon spills to suspected fuel sources is recognized by many workers. However, source identification of pollutants (e.g., typing of fuels) on the basis of their GC-MS profiles is often complicated by two factors: (1) serious colinearities and multicolinearities among the measurement variables, and (2) the confounding of the desired chemical information by experimental variables or other systematic variations in the data. Several projects that involve these effects and methods for dealing with them will be discussed.
