PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF MERCAPTOETHYLAMINE AND CYSTEINE AGAINST MONOCROTALINE INTOXICATION IN RATS

Protection by MEA and cysteine against monocrotaline intoxication in male Sprague-Dawley rats was studied. An intraperitoneal injection of MEA, 150 mg/kg, 15 minutes before a subcutaneous injection of monocrotaline, 30 mg/kg, caused a significant increase in the survival rate. Two injections each of MEA, 150 mg/kg, 15 minutes before and 60 minutes after was shown to be protective even against an injection of 60 mg of monocrotaline per kilogram of body weight. Administration of MEA 2 hours after monocrotaline injection was nonprotective. Two intraperitoneal injections of cysteine, 300 mg/kg, 15 minutes before and 60 minutes after an injection of monocrotaline, 30 mg/kg, did prolong the survival of rats during a 9-week period. On the basis of improvement in growth, as well as the alleviation of pulmonary vascular injury, MEA appears to be more protective than cysteine. © 1968.
