The biological activity of the toxic component from Drechslera sacchari was detected by means of visible leaf symptoms (biotest) and cytological abnormities. After applicating the culture filtrate of the pathogen respectively a partially purificated crude toxin-preparation as well as after inoculating the leaves of a susceptible sugarcane-variety qualitatively vast equivalent injurities were found. In all cases characteristic red-brown coloured stripes were induced on the leaves. On ultrastructural level the chloroplasts and mitochondriae were damaged and plasmolysis in leaf-mesophyll cells was observed. In-vitro-plants reacted in a similar way too after exposition with the host-specific toxin.
