Local stress peaks are the main reason for fatigue failure of structures. It is therefore of interest to understand the stress distribution in a component under service conditions. A systematic method is proposed to show how engineering components may be designed by simulation of biological growth. The method is based on “misuse” of the swelling option in the FE‐code Abaqus in order to simulate “growth” of structures into a shape more appropriate for the actual loading case considered. The method promises to be an extremely powerful “intelligent” CAD approach. Copyright © 1990, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
