LASER PHOTOELECTRON-SPECTROSCOPY OF 1-NAPHTHOL AND 2-NAPHTHOL - RELATIVE STABILITY OF THE CIS AND TRANS CATION ROTAMERS

Laser photoelectron spectra of 1- and 2-naphthol have been measured using high-resolution zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy. The selective nature of the 1 + 1 ionization process allows independent measurement of the photoelectron spectra of the cis and trans rotamers of each molecule. The result is a determination of the stability of the rotamers in the ion relative to the neutral ground state. Lifetime measurements of the intermediate S1 state of both rotamers in each molecule are also presented to address the question of different oscillator strengths for the cis and trans rotamers. The results indicate the oscillator strengths are similar and therefore the intensity of S0-S1 transitions can be used to estimate the population of cis and trans rotamers in the ground state.
