Self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations are presented for a variety of heterogeneous systems consisting of one-dimensional arrays of itinerant paramagnets, ferromagnets, and antiferromagnets. Several aspects of the multilayers and interfaces are explored: enhancement and reduction of the local magnetic moments, magnetic coupling at the interfaces, magnetic arrangements within each film and among non-neighboring films, the global symmetry of the systems, frustration, orientation of the various moments with respect to an outside applied field, and magnetic-field-induced transitions. The various situations exhibit a rich structure and a wealth of possible magnetic effects.
