BASELINE BLOOD VALUES OF CHIMPANZEE .2. RELATIONSHIP OF AGE AND SEX AND SERUM CHEMISTRY VALUES

Statistical analyses of 1935 serum chemistry determinations at the 6571st Aeromedical Research Laboratory indicate that the serum chemistry values of the chimpanzee are, in general, similar to man. The serum potassium and, possibly, calcium levels are somewhat lower than the norm for man. There appears to be a decrease in serum urea nitrogen in the female chimpanzee with age and a decrease in serum total protein of the male chimpanzee at 80–100 months. Although there were variations in the serum electrolytes, CO2 and pH values which were correlated with the age of the chimpanzee in the present study, these variations were probably due to excitement of the younger chimpanzee at the time the blood was drawn. © 1968 S.
