THERMAL-EXPANSION AND SPONTANEOUS MAGNETOSTRICTION OF A UCO5.3 SINGLE-CRYSTAL

Thermal expansion of a UCo5.3 single crystal has been investigated by X-ray diffractomery. It is found that the basal-plane deformation upon magnetic ordering is much larger than that along the c axis in contradiction with other RCo5 compounds (R = nonmagentic rare-earth ion). At T = 5K, the volume ffect omega-s exceeds 0.54% giving, together with a low Co magnetic moment, a very high value of the magnetoelastic coupling coefficient n(Co-Co) = 27 x 10(-3)-mu-B-2, by one order of magnitude higher than in YCo5.
