摘要
Although commonplace in many industries, bar-coding techniques have yet to impact the civil engineering, building and construction industries. This Paper provides an overview of bar-coding techniques and describes in detail the results from a feasibility study undertaken for a major UK supplier of prestressed, precast concrete flooring beams. The research confirmed the technical, economic and operational feasibility of introducing bar-coding. The findings described relate not only to this specific industrial situation but also to the management of other materials within the construction industry. The overall implications for materials management throughout the industry are discussed together with the need for an industry-wide standard for product identification.
