Far-infrared spectra of condensed methane and methane-d4

摘要
The far-infrared spectra of thick samples of liquid and solid CH4 and CD4 have been recorded in the 20-200 cm(-1) region. Only one broad band is seen in the spectra of the liquids and the solids in their phase I. The presence of two translational lattice modes in the spectra of phase II is consistent with the cubic structure with space group T-4- P2(1)3 and site symmetry C-3. The spectrum of CD4 suggests a slight departure from cubic symmetry in phase III.
