SPAWNING AND GAMETE PRODUCTION IN ARENICOLA MARINA IN THE NETHERLANDS, WADDEN SEA

During 4 years in succession weight frequency distributions of an adult Arenicola marina population in the western Wadden Sea were investigated. Oocyte development, spawning and spawning season were also studied, and the production by gametes released was calculated. Gametogenesis starts in February; maximum gamete production occurs in the period May to July. Ripe oocytes are present at the end of June. Maximum oocyte numbers, amounting to 316 000 per female (of 4 g average wet weight) occur in mid-August. There are 2 distinct spawning peaks; 60 to 80% of the ripe animals spawn in August-September, the rest in early November. The dry weight of the spawning products amounts to 25% of the biomass of the adult population in summer. © 1979.
