ENDOSCOPIC GASTRITIS AND DUODENITIS

There is yet to be a universally accepted endoscopic and histopathologic classification of gastritis. The Sydney system for classification of gastritis, presented at the World Congress of Gastroenterology in 1990, is beyond doubt the most important contribution to this subject during the past year (1). As this system not only covers the histologic aspects but also the endoscopic features, it is readily obvious that the latter aspects will compose the main topic of this review. Wherever appropriate, other recent literature data will be included to cover the most important recent related endoscopic contributions.
