A HIGH-RESOLUTION ELECTRON-MICROSCOPY INVESTIGATION OF CURVATURE IN CARBON NANOTUBES

Evidence for heptagon inclusion in multi-walled carbon nanotubes was sought in are-produced carbon deposits. Transmission electron microscopy revealed many curved nanotubes although their relative abundance was low. Close examination of the micrographs in the regions of expected heptagon inclusion shows that the curvature is accomplished by folding or fracture of the lattice planes. This observed phenomenon contradicts the theoretical modelling studies which predict stable structures with negative curvature accomplished by heptagon/pentagon pairs. A possible explanation for curvature in single-walled tubes is presented based on a molecular mechanics geometry optimisation study of sp(3) inclusion in a graphite sheet.
