L-kynurenine sulfate, quinolinic and nicotinic acids injected intraperitoneally to 7-8-days old, 11-12-days old and 14-days old rats produced tremor, clonic convulsions and tonic twisting of the trunk. The same doses of kynurenines were inactive in 21-22-days old and adult (2 months old) rats. Anthranilic acid was ineffective in all ages. The fact that excitatory effects of kynurenines were observed only in both immature rats after intraperitoneal administration and in adult mice after brain intraventricular administration suggests that effects observed in the present study are due to penetration of kynurenines through the immature blood-brain barrier into the brain. © 1978 The Italian Pharmacological Society.
