The stability of the growth of lamellar eutectics with respect to variations in the widths of the phases was determined by solving the diffusion in the liquid ahead of the irregular geometry and matching the boundary conditions at the interface. At spacings larger than a critical value corresponding to the minimum undercooling, the growth is stable. Long-wavelength variations in the spacing were found to control the spacing by a mechanism that involves the formation of faults in the structure.
