THE LOWEST EXCITED ELECTRONIC SINGLET-STATES OF ALL-TRANS BETA-CAROTENE SINGLE-CRYSTALS

摘要
Absorption, fluorescence emission, reflectance, resonance Raman, and resonance Raman excitation spectra were recorded of single crystals of all-trans beta-carotene. The 0-0 band of the S0 --> S2 allowed electronic transition is found at 18700 +/- 50 cm-1. The fluorescence emission consists of two components, the major one originating out of the S2 state of all-trans beta-carotene. The resonance Raman excitation spectra show bands in the pre-resonance region below the absorption edge of the crystal. They may be interpreted as transitions to the optically forbidden 2 1A(g) state (S1).
