THE INFLUENCE OF STRUCTURAL HETEROGENEITIES ON THE COHESIVITY AND BREAKUP OF AGGLOMERATES IN SIMPLE SHEAR-FLOW

摘要
The transmission of stress within an agglomerate, and hence its tendency to break from hydrodynamic shear, strongly depends on the arrangement of the primary particles within the cluster. The influence of structure on the dispersion process has been investigated using five types of computer-generated structures. Results of the simulations indicate that heterogeneity of the structures can account for an order of magnitude discrepancy between the critical hydrodynamic stress observed experimentally and that predicted on the basis of measurements of the cohesive strength of the solids. In addition, the simulations showed that there is no direct correlation between the fractal dimension of an agglomerate structure and its dispersibility.
