THE PORTEVIN-LE CHATELIER EFFECT IN CU-AL SINGLE-CRYSTALS INVESTIGATED BY ACOUSTIC-EMISSION AND SLIP LINE CINEMATOGRAPHY

摘要
Stage I of plastic deformation of Cu-Al single crystals has been studied within the temperature range 296-788K by the acoustic emission and slip line cinematography methods. Inhomogeneous deformation of the Luders type was observed. From 470K up to 720K the deformation is characterized by the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect (serrated flow). The number of simultaneously active slip band bundles decreases with increasing temperature and in the PLC regime only one dip band bundle is active during each serration. No slip band bundles were observed at temperatures higher than that for the PLC effect termination. The onset of the PLC regime is manifested by a step arise behaviour of acoustic emission (AE) and an increase of AE continuous and burst count rates by several orders. Increasing the temperature within the range of the PLC regime results in a remarkable increase of the height of serrations, the rate of occurring slip lines and the AE count rates. The high temperature termination of the PLC effect is characterized by a significant decay in count rates.
