EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF 3D-BAND SHAPE FROM HIGH-FIELD SUSCEPTIBILITY OF IRON AND SOME IRON ALLOYS

Measurements are presented of the field dependence of the magnetization of some ferromagnetic samples in high magnetic fields up to 16 MA/m (200 kOe) at 4.2 K, 77 K and 300 K. Results are given obtained on a nickel single crystal, an iron-silicon single crystal (7.4 at % Si) and on polycrystalline specimens of iron, eight iron-cobalt alloys and three iron-nickel alloys. The temperature dependence of the measured differential susceptibility can mainly be ascribed to the suppression of spin waves by the magnetic field. From the low temperature results an estimation is obtained for the spin-orbit interaction energy of our alloys. Finally a part of the density of states curve of bcc 3d-transition metals is constructed from the experimental values of the magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization and the electronic heat capacity. The result is compared with calculations by several authors. © 1969.
