MICROWIRE ARRAYS FOR INFRARED POLARIZERS

Two-dimensional arrays of metal wires were fabricated by electroplating nickel or copper into the columnar pores of anodic alumina films. The wire arrays transmit only such light that is polarized vertically to the wires. Since the diameter and the spacing of the wires are smaller than those of conventional wire grids, the arrays exhibit an improved polarization function, particularly at shorter wavelengths. An extinction ratio of 20-30 dB was attained in the wavelength range of 2-7 mum.
