FEEDING PREFERENCE FOR DISEASED AND WILTED SUNFLOWER IN THE GRASSHOPPER, MELANOPLUS-DIFFERENTIALIS

Field observations indicate that the polyphagous grasshopper Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas) prefers sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) leaf tissue that (1) has been damaged by previous feeding of other insects, (2) is infected with rust fungus, Puccinia helianthii, and (3) is wilted, to healthy tissue from the same plant. Laboratory and field tests on M. differentialis preference for diseased and wilted leaves over healthy leaves confirm the field observations. Evidence cited from this and other species suggests that this preference is due to favorable alterations in the nutritional and/or defensive chemistry of the plant. These results partially support theories which link changes in plant chemistry to outbreaks of some insects. FRASSPRAFERENZ DER HEUSCHRECKE, MELANOPLUS DIFFERENTIALIS FÜR KRANKE UND WELKENDE SONNENBLUMEN Beobachtungen im Feld deuten darauf hin, dass die polyphage Heuschrecke Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas) gesundem Blattgewebe der Sonnenblume (Helianthus annuus L.) solches vorzieht, das (1) durch vorhergehenden Frass anderer Insekten beschädigt ist, das (2) durch den Rostpilz, Puccinia helianthii, befallen ist und (3) das verwelkt ist. Präferenzversuche im Feld und im Laboratorium mit kranken und verwelkten Blättern gegenüber gesunden Blättern bestätigen diese Beobachtungen. Hinweise von dieser und von andern Insektenarten lassen vermuten, dass diese Präferenz entweder durch eine Veränderung der Nahrungsbeschaffenheit und/oder durch Abwehrmechanismen der Pflanze verursacht ist. Diese Resultate unterstützen teilweise die Theorien über Zusammenhänge zwischen Veränderungen in der chemischen Zusammensetzung der Pflanzen und dem Massenauftreten bestimmter Insekten. 1979 The Netherlands Entomological Society
