ELECTRONIC STATES OF WEAKLY CHEMISORBED SYSTEMS STUDIED BY COMPARING PHOTOEMISSION AND METASTABLE DEEXCITATION SPECTROSCOPIES - CO ON AG(110)

摘要
The combined use of the photoemission and metastable deexcitation spectroscopy, because of the extreme surface sensitivity of the latter, allows for the observation of electronic states related to molecular chemisorption located in the energy region of the d bands of the metal where ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy alone cannot give definite information because of strong bulk contributions. In the adsorption of CO on Ag(110), we have detected the following states: E1 = 3.3 +/- 0.15, E2 = 7.0 +/- 0.3, E3 = 9.6 +/- 0.15, E4 = 12.8 +/- 0.15, E5 = 14.9 +/- 0.15 eV (binding energies) obtaining the first evidence of weak chemisorption in this system and a quantitative measure of the mutual influence between the electronic states of the molecule and of the surface.
