RARE-EARTH COBALT MAGNETIC-MATERIALS OF THE TYPE SM0.6R0.4-XR'XCO5 [R=GD, DY AND R'=PR, ND]

SmCo5 magnets exhibit temperature coefficient of magnetization of −0.04% per deg C between 0 and 200°C. Earlier studies have indicated that good temperature compensated magnetic materials may be prepared by replacing part of Sm in SmCo5 with other heavy rare earth elements such as Gd and Dy. In the present study quaternaries of the type Sm0.6[(Gd,Dy)0.4−x(Pr, Nd)x]Co5 [x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3] have been investigated. These were prepared by induction melting of the respective metals. X-ray diffraction technique was used to determine the presence of single phase. Magnetic measurements were performed on aligned powders. Sm0.6Nd0.1Dy0.3Co5 was found to have the lowest value for temperature coefficient of magnetization α. Its magnetic properties are: 4πMS =9.12 kG, 4πMr =8.76 kG, Hci =3.1 kOe and HA =95 kOe at room temperature. The value of α= −0.0148% per deg C from 20 to 220°C. Results for other compositions and their systematic trends are discussed. © 1979 IEEE
