UP-CONVERSION IN ER3+-DOPED FLUORITE-TYPE CRYSTALS EXCITED AT 800 NM

A study of the green and red emissions from different Er3+ sites of CdF2, CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 for excitation around 800 nm by a Ti sapphire laser is presented. For CaF2, the green emission intensity depends on the square of the excitation power. whereas for CdF2 (codoped with Na+), SrF2, and BaF2 a cubic dependence is observed. Excitation mechanisms are proposed and discussed, with, in particular, a three-step absorption process for CdF2(Na), SrF2, and BaF2.
