MOSSBAUER MEASUREMENTS AND EXCHANGE INTERACTIONS IN ANTI-FERROMAGNETIC GDVO4

Mossbauer effect measurements have been made on single-crystal and powder specimens of GdVO4 using the 86.5 keV transition in 155Gd. The temperature dependence of the hyperfine field below the Neel temperature agreed well with order parameter measurements using the magnetoelectric effect. All available magnetic data were analysed to give a nearest-neighbour exchange constant of -0.061+or-0.002K and next-nearest-neighbour exchange constants of -0.002+or-0.002K (inter-sublattice) and -0.002+or-0.001K (intra-sublattice). Covalency effects were shown to have a significant effect on the EFG and CEF parameters.
