VOLATILE AND ODOROUS COMPONENTS IN SOLID SWINE MANURE

Raw solid swine manure was extracted with dichloromethane. The extracted solution was mixed with distilled water after concentration and steam-distilled. The distillate was extracted with dichloromethane and fractionated into carboxylic acid, phenol, basic, and neutral fractions and all fractions had a characteristic and strong odor. Quantification and characterization of odorous components were performed by GC, GC-MS, NMR, and IR. Ten compounds were detected from the carboxylic acid fraction and three compounds from the phenol fraction. The two main components in the neutral fraction were mesityl oxide and diacetone alcohol. © 1979 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
