MECHANICALLY ALLOYED ZR-TI-CU-NI AMORPHOUS-ALLOYS WITH SIGNIFICANT SUPERCOOLED LIQUID REGION

Quaternary Zr-Ti-Cu-Ni amorphous alloys have been prepared by mechanical alloying from crystalline elemental powders and investigated by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The amorphous alloys were found to exhibit a wide supercooled liquid region before crystallization. This is believed to be the first evidence for the appearance of a supercooled liquid region for mechanically alloyed Zr-Ti-based amorphous powders. The transformation to the crystalline state has been followed by isothermal and constant-rate heating DSC. The origin of the significant supercooled liquid region of these new alloys is discussed.
