Colonies of Eudendrium glomeratum were kept for 5 h at 14-22-degrees-C in natural light (10 cal/cm2/h) or complete darkness. Irradiance produced a dramatic depletion in glycogen stores both at 14-degrees and 22-degrees-C and a decrease in oxygen consumption at 22-degrees-C only (i.e., under slightly hyperthermic conditions). These variations were taken as due to physiological stress and to suggest that irradiance and temperature play a synergistic role in determining the circannual cycle of shallow-water populations.
