OPTICAL-ABSORPTION OF TUNGSTEN BRONZE THIN-FILMS FOR ELECTROCHROMIC APPLICATIONS

Thin films of WO3 (500 nm thickness), deposited on indium tin oxide coated glass plates, were immersed in dilute sulphuric acid and electrolytically reduced to produce the tungsten bronze, HxWO3. The intervalence charge transfer absorption band in the near-IR-visible region was obtained for increasing x, and the rise in absorbance was found to decrease. The results are analysed by assigning (apparent) extinction coefficients ε to the bronzes for individual ranges of x. The implication of the different ε values on transmission is discussed for layer systems viable for "smart windows". © 1990.
