DEMAGNETIZING FIELDS AND OTHER SHAPE EFFECTS IN HIGH-TC CERAMICS

We report magnetic measurements on sintered pellets of YBa2Cu3O7 (for different radii R of the macroscopic samples) and on oriented grains dispersed in epoxy resin. We show that, for highly compact specimens with packing factors > 85%, the demagnetizing factor is imposed by the macroscopic shape of the sample. On the contrary, when the packing factor is lower than about 10%, it is governed (on average) by the geometrical form of the individual grains. After correcting for demagnetizing effects, the low field data (H ≤ 5 G) can be described by an effective penetration depth λeff of the order of 20 μm in the present case. This parameter depends on imperfections of the surface of the pellet. © 1990.
