ADAPTATION OF A MATRIX PARAMETERIZATION OF THE MIDDLE ATMOSPHERIC RADIATIVE COOLING FOR AN ARBITRARY VERTICAL COORDINATE GRID

One of the major drawbacks of recently proposed matrix parameterizations of the middle atmospheric radiative cooling is their rigidly fixed vertical coordinate grid. A straightforward matrix transformation method is described to adjust the parameterization matrix to an arbitrary vertical grid. Applied to the 15-mu-m CO2 band parameterization proposed by AKMAEV and SHVED [(1982) J. atmos. terr. Phys. 44, 9931 for local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) region of the middle atmosphere, the method is shown to introduce cooling rate errors not exceeding 0.11 K day-1 for a vertical grid spacing of up to 5 km.
