FERROMAGNETISM OF 4D-METAL MONOLAYERS ON AG, AU AND PD(001) SURFACES

Results are presented of a systematic study based on the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method for 4d-metal monolayers (Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd) on the Ag(001), Au(001) and Pd(001) surfaces. For Tc, Ru, and Rh on Ag(001), Ru, Rh on Au(001), and Ru on Pd(001) we found ferromagnetic solutions with partly large magnetic moments. Total energy analysis reveals that the ferromagnetic solution is always lower in energy than the paramagnetic one. Compared to the 3d-metal monolayers, the increased in-plane d-d, monolayer-substrate d-sp and d-d hybridization bear interesting consequences on magnetism.
