RESEARCH ASSESSMENT EXERCISE 1992 - LIBRARY AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA STUDIES PANEL

Reports on the 1992 Research Assessment Exercise and specifically on the work of the Library and Information Management and Communication and Media Studies Panel, in considering research submissions in two units of assessment. Panel members agreed with all of the final ratings and felt that rigour and fairness had been applied to the exercise within the parameters set by the Funding Council. There was, however, a feeling that two cited publications was insufficient to give an indication of an individual's contribution to research and that in future there should be greater emphasis on non traditional forms of publication. Concluded that three cases need to be considered by the Funding Councils in the areas under consideration: where library staff undertake some work in a related academic department; where library staff undertake some work in a library and information science department; and where the library itself has a solid base of research activity but where there is no library and information science department.
