METHYLMERCURY BINDS TO A LOW-MOLECULAR WEIGHT SUBSTANCE IN RABBIT AND HUMAN-ERYTHROCYTES

Behavior of methylmercury in animal blood was investigated by gel filtration of stroma-free hemolysates from rat, rabbit, and human erythrocytes, treated with methylmercury. In the rabbit and human erythrocytes, methylmercury was bound to a low molecular weight substance rather than hemoglobin, while almost all of methylmercury in the rat erythrocyte was bound to the hemoglobin fraction. The methylmercury-bound substance of low molecular weight in rabbit erythrocytes showed a similar behavior pattern to that of glutathione (GSH) bound with methylmercury on gel filtration with Sephadex G-15 and thin-layer chromatography. © 1979.
