EXPERIMENTAL PRODUCTION OF SEROUS OTITIS MEDIA

In 12 dogs, Teflon paste was injected near the nasopharyngeal orifice of the right auditory tube. As a measure of tubal patency, resistance to airflow through the Eustachian tubes was measured. Collections of serous fluid were noted in the right middle ear of those dogs in which paste was found immediately posterior to the tubal cartilage. Impaired tubal patency, as demonstrated by increased resistance to airflow through the auditory tube, was noted only in dogs in which Teflon paste was injected anterior to the tube itself.
