SPECTRAL HOLE-BURNING MEASUREMENTS OF OPTICAL DEPHASING BETWEEN 2-300 K IN SM2+ DOPED SUBSTITUTIONALLY DISORDERED MICROCRYSTALS

Photochemical hole burning has been investigated in Sm2+ doped crystalline powders of the composition MxM1-xFCl0.5Br0.5 (M = group-II ion) between room temperature and 2 K. For the materials studied, the whole widths are independent of host and approximately double fluorescence line widths previously reported for BaFCl:Sm2+. Optical dephasing above about 15 K is shown to be dominated by Raman scattering of phonons with an electron phonon coupling constant of 100 GHz. Below 15 K the homogeneous line width temperature dependence resembles that of an amorphous material.
