摘要
Progress in surface science and in computer methods has resulted in a change from bench-scale laboratory tests to fundamental studies and large scale pilot operation. Examples are given on the use of in-situ methods coupled to scale-up to pilot units. Catalysis may play a major role in solving future problems in converting fossil fuels in a way being more efficient and environmentally acceptable. Examples are given for gas conversion comparing direct and indirect conversion routes, and it is illustrated how coal based power plants may apply catalyst technology. A positive attitude to long-term research is required to meet these challenges to catalysis.
