EQUATION OF STATE FOR PERSISTENT-FLEXIBLE LIQUID-CRYSTAL POLYMERS - COMPARISON WITH POLY(GAMMA-BENZYL-L-GLUTAMATE) IN DIMETHYLFORMAMIDE

Khokhlov and Semenov have proposed a theory for long persistent chains, which quite accurately describes the liquid-crystalline behavior of dilute solutions of long homogeneous bend-elastic macromolecules. In this work a simple modification of the Khokhlov –Semenov approach is used to obtain an equation of state for persistent-flexible main-chain polymers, which is valid over a wide range of polymer concentrations. Comparisons with experimental data for dimethylformamide solutions of polyi (γ-benzyl-Lglutamate) yield good agreement for large polymer axial ratios, where rigid particle theories deviate strongly from the experimental results. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
